Blog Post: Planning and Justifying the Industrial Internet of Things
One of the key ways to improve operational performance is to reduce unplanned downtime. An ARC Advisory Group blog post, Technology Trends to Watch for in 2017 , noted: One of the biggest end user challenges remains unscheduled downtime. IIoT-enabled solutions, such as remote monitoring and predictive maintenance, can help minimize, if not totally eliminate this, which would deliver a rapid ROI. At the recent ARC Industry Forum , ARC’s Harry Forbes interviewed Emerson’s Phil Niccolls in this 8:10 YouTube video about the challenges manufacturers face in planning and justifying the use of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) in improving operational performance. Phil opens noting three concern areas he often hears. The first is around needing help in assessing the technology available and the financial justification to go forward. The second area is security. As additional wireless measurement and access for remote experts to analyze and recommend, the need for a highly-secure infrastructure is required. The third area is to develop the project roadmap going forward—what should be done and in what order. This also includes determining the measures of success. He explains that over $1 trillion dollars is lost by global manufacturers and producers due to suboptimal performance. Phil described how Emerson has taken a programmatic approach called Operational Certainty to help manufacturers achieve Top Quartile performance in their respective industry segment. This approach consists of Plantweb digital ecosystem technology built on years of digital communications and wireless device and infrastructure experience. This experience helps to create the Secure First Mile to get data out securely to the analytics software and experts required to act up the information provided by these Pervasive Sensing devices around the manufacturing facility. As an example, Phil cites PeakVue diagnostics which help predict when equipment failures will occur. For more on how this analytics-based diagnostic works, visit the post, Avoiding Bearing Failures with the Rule of Tens PeakVue Measurement Methodology . Watch the video for more as Phil describes how these analytics are available at many levels and for many roles including locally on smart phones and tablets to remotely to remote experts via Connected Services . Forum Post: RE: Flow rate
Hi Yunnus, Thank you for your question. I must preface my answer by letting you know that your 'basic' question is quite broad, and therefore we must clarify some things before we can find a satisfactory answer. First of all, as Leirbag indicated, there exists a large variety of 'flow meters', which operate somewhat differently, with different parts, principles, calculations, etc. For example, Emerson's Rosemount vortex flow meters have a shedding bar inside the flow line which introduces a specific flow obstruction in the middle of the flow line, which causes predictable vibrations (due to vortices) on part of the meter body that makes contact with a piezoelectric sensor. The piezoelectric sensor sends very low voltage signals into a transmitter, which can be interpreted through the electronics, and "output" on a 4 to 20 mA signal by changing the resistance (ohms) of an internal circuit, which affects the current (milliAmps) on the line that provides power (Volts) to the transmitter. This would be an example of a vortex sensor with a transmitter using analog outputs, or a vortex flowmeter. Emerson's Rosemount Differential Pressure ("dP") flow meters might use an orifice plate, or annubar, or other manner of causing a pressure differential. Pressure is measured on both sides of the restriction using small devices such as capacitance-based transducers to send small electrical changes to a transmitter, where these pressure inputs are used in calculations performed by the electronics to determine the flow rate. This transmitter might have an analog output, like the vortex meter above, or perhaps a digital output method, such as HART variables... but we should leave digital communications for another time. Emerson's Micro Motion series of coriolis flow meters have a sensor installed in the flow line, which divides the flow into two parallel tubes that vibrate due to the coriolis effect and a drive coil. Pickoff coils detect the frequency of these vibrations and this is communicated (along with temperature from a Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD)) from the sensor, to a transmitter, which can output the flow rate to a control system or display. These are just a few of the many different kinds of flow meters available from Emerson, with different measurement principles. You may notice some common themes in the operations of these three examples. The flow through the sensor causes some measurable disturbance, which is checked in the transmitter against known and calibrated constant values. The transmitter then outputs the signal over wires to a control / monitoring system, or to a display to indicate the flow rate. So, (your question) what part of the flow meter is responsible for flow rate? The sensor detects the flow and sends signals to the transmitter. The transmitter interprets the signals, checks them against internal configurations and uses formulas to calculate the flow rate. This flow rate is output by the transmitter according the the configured output range (output range 4-20mA output=0-100 kg/hr flow, for example). This output is often received by customer control systems on an input card, with it's own (matching) configured input range (4-20mA input=0-100 kg/hr flow). I hope this provides some clarity about your inquiry. Let us know if you have more questions or comments. Kind regards, Travis

Forum Post: RE: Unlok Computer (Kerpware Client ) Locked Out while trying to use DeltavAdmin password
Hello, Well, you have yourself in a bad situation. Please stop logging in as the DeltaVAdmin account, for this very reason. This is a DeltaV service account and should _never_ be used in such a manner. Do you have a reason you use this account to log in? It is best a practice to create another user account for OPC communications. This account can be created using User Manager and only needs "View Only" or "Operate" permissions ( I forget which). To recover from your situation, log into the computer as another user who has administrative privileges and unlock the account via the Windows user manager interface. Good luck, Dave

Blog Post: Focus on the Process in Your Safety Requirements Specification
A safety requirement specification (SRS) for a safety instrumented system (SIS), as part of the IEC 61511 global safety standard [ from the exida blog ]: …incorporates all the analysis done during the Risk Assessment, HAZOP [ hazard and operability study ]/PHA [ process hazard analysis ] and LOPA [ layer of protection analysis ] reviews. Emerson’s Russell Cockman presented at an Institute of Measurement and Control meeting about why it’s important to embrace the concept of the safety requirements specification. He opened citing statistics for the UK Health and Safety Executive on the Primary Cause of SIS Failure: Russell noted that success of any safety instrumented function (SIF) within the SIS is entirely dependent on it doing the right thing at the right time in the right way. Given this common goal of both process safety and functional safety, it is strange that there is often such a disconnect between them throughout their lifecycle. He asked the attendees how many SIS specifications do they see with no mention of the process being protected at all? It is no wonder that specifications are the source of so much failure, as it cannot be clearly understood from the specification what exactly the design intent of each requirement is. Russell explained that early errors made up front in the process design stage can get compounded along the way to where hidden systematic failures wait for the right conditions and contribute to the likelihood of accidents occurring. During the process design phase, the hazard and risk studies can vary significantly both in the complexity and novelty in design. It leads to the generation of numerous primary documents including the P&IDs. These prescribe what measurement and control devices will be connected to the various parts of the automation system. The connection between hazard and SIF may begin to get lost. Between each phase and within each phase are interfaces between individuals and disciplines. Each interface is also a source of error and these errors can be compounded giving a believable but erroneous result. Russell emphasized that a well-written SRS encourages the contributors and users to have a wider understanding of exactly why each part of an SIS is designed as it is. Knowledge outside the boundaries of an individual’s discipline will lessen the potential for unnoticed error at interfaces. Also, based on the safety lifecycle as described in the IEC 61511 standard, a significant purpose for the SRS is that it drives the development of validation plans that are used to confirm the correctness of the safety instrumented functions and the overall installed SIS solution. Russell shared IEC 61511-1 clause 10.3, which contains a minimum list of requirements for consideration in the SRS with considerable emphasis placed on the process and its requirements. Russell summarized his presentation with what he and the SIS functional safety consultants often find missing from an SRS. Regarding process focus, what’s missing is an understanding of the hazard scenarios and how the safe state is achieved. Also missing is a clear understanding of the effects of combining hazards and various scenarios. A clear understanding is for all the process states and mode is needed for the SIF-focused functionality. As far as the device safety requirements, what’s missing is how this integrity is affected by the process and what restrictions and methods are required in testing the devices on a periodic basis. It’s important to underscore that you cannot validate your SIS without the SRS and that a well-developed SRS is a significant contributor in reducing systematic error. A better understanding of the hazards in the process leads to better designed and safer solutions. If the SRS is not properly linked to the potential process hazards, then it extremely difficult to judge the importance of these requirements throughout the entire safety lifecycle. Is it only happening for a specific single alarm ? or it is happening for all "blue" or "red" priority alarm for example! if it is for groups of alarms with the same priority then you have to uncheck "Auto Acknowledge New Alarms " option for the specific priority group! else you have to follow the steps mentioned by @Matt Stoner

We are looking at making our operators more accountable for their actions within the deltav system, therefore looking at coming away from the generic operator account and having individual user accounts with operate privileges. Does anyone have any experience with such a setup who can offer any setup advice / lessons learnt. i'm thinking of keeping windows logged in the generic operator account, then getting the operators to login to deltav user their individual accounts.

Forum Post: RE: DeltaV Operator Login
We do this at my plant. As you said, the Windows login is with a generic operator login. At the beginning of the shift, the operator logs in with his name/password. To ensure that someone doesn't forget to login, we run a script on each operator station at shift change that automatically logs the user out. The script logs in as a generic user "SHIFT_CHANGE" that allows alarms to be visible but doesn't allow changes to be made.

Forum Post: RE: Flow rate
Hi Yunus, You are correct. Different sensors have different ranges, and the sensor range is indicated in the model code. You can find Product Data Sheets (PDS) on Emerson's website for all of Emerson's flow meters, which detail the sensor capabilities, including pressure min/max, temperature min/max, flow min/max, etc. and lists the model code order information. This can be used to decode a model code on an existing device, or to build the model string for a new flowmeter you desire. Emerson Sales can also help with this.
