Forum Post: RE: DC grounding for 2-wide power/controller carriers in a redundant controller node .

I also could not find this in BOL. The Site Planning and Preparation guide (D800015X092 from December 2008) indicates in figure 5-4 (page 5-7)that when using the DC/DC system power supplies, you only need to connect one of the 2-wide carriers to DC Reference. The note on the diagram states: "Use the left-hand screw only. Only one ground wire is necessary because the return side of the DC power supplies is internally connected to the Ground terminal of either terminal strip." The Quick Reference guide for DeltaV Power, Grounding, and Surge Suppression (D800053X042 from July 2013) also shows that only one DC Reference ground wire is needed. It is shown connected to the left side carrier for S-series, while the Site Planning and Prep guide diagram shows it connected to the right side carrier for M-series. So both generations of documentation call for one DC Reference ground, and either carrier can be used. I personally would use the right hand carrier for this ground. This carrier is always present (i.e. the one connected to the first IO carrier.) Note that if you add an Injected power carrier, you have to run a DC Ground reference to the Injected Power Carrier to ground the bus to the right of this carrier.

I want to set up a trend directory for the operations group. I was looking at the dirt_ref,grf graphic in the Pic\Standard folder to do this. I renamed and saved it as a new .grf file. I filled in the description and file name by double clicking on box next to the folder icon when in configure mode. When I try to bring a trend in by clicking the folder icon in run mode, I get an error that says "File Not Found In Default Path" Does anyone know where I an going wrong?

There are a couple of other considerations for DC/DC power supplies, since the VE5008 and VE5009 may be fed on either 24V DC or 12V DC, but the LocalBus is always 12V DC. If your feed SMPS is 12V DC, and you are referencing that bulk power supply AT the power supply, there should not be a ground wire on either 2-wide. If your feed SMPS is 24V DC, and you are referencing that bulk power supply AT the power supply, you need another DC reference ground at the DeltaV system power supply, since you're passing through an additional 24/12 stepdown transformer. For S-Series, since this can only be fed on 24V DC, you always need that reference ground on the carrier. For both M-Series and S-Series hardware, only the connection point that is marked as ground actually has a connection to ground. Look for the chassis / power ground symbol on the hardware. In a redundant configuration, since that ground is carried through the 12-pin redundancy connector, you only ground one 2-wide. Otherwise, you create a ground loop. This can be tested easily with a DVM.

I undestand the accuracy depends of fluid condictions, but I have other question. What is the minimum allowable diference between water and oil density that the Coriolis meter can measure? 20 °API...30 °API

Andre, Your response implies that you can figure out the permission level of the logged on user. I've only been able to get Operate to tell me some very narrow permission levels about a user. Is there a way to retrieve the group the user belongs to? Otherwise, what are you using for your criteria?

Hi Isocorro, Yes, you are right, that is what BOL explained, but if you do the math with the data reported in DeltaV Insight, the calculations do not match! Example, data taken from DV Insight Models Viewing tab for one of my PID Loops: 3 × First Order Time Constant + Dead Time 4 × Dead Time TC DT TSS % Difference TSS-1 TSS-2 342.2 95.1 1055 6.32% 1121.7 380.4 316.6 94.1 960 8.74% 1043.9 376.4 281 102.5 1148 -17.64% 945.5 410 315.6 102.5 1148 -8.60% 1049.3 410 342.7 98 1342 -16.09% 1126.1 392 As you can see, if one does the math there is a difference between DV Insight and the calculations done with the indicated criteria. I included a column labeled % Difference, you can see that the difference is big. So, the same question remains, How does DV Insight do the calculations for TSS? Thanks. Best Regards, Marcos.

Typically we wouldn't recommend attempting a density-based water cut calculation below 20° API, but this might be extended slightly if the water is heavy (i.e. salt water).

I am having trouble with an automated flow valve responding in DeltaV. The problem is that in DeltaV the valve is showing that it is open but the valve itself is actually close. I'm thinking that it is not an actual valve but an actuator problem. Any suggestions on what to check? Thanks.

And does DV Operate show closed when the valve is physically open in the field? If this is a fail open valve (increase to close, 4mA Open) then you need a different dynamo than a normal fail close valve (increase to open, 4mA = Close). Other potential options exist to resolve the issue, but we need a bit more information. Did this work before or are you commissioning a new valve? Is this a new valve or existing, has someone replaced the valve recently?

In DeltaV Version 11.3 one of the standby MD Plus controller continuously reset by itself and tries to load the program. This cycle repeats continuously. Both active and standby controllers software firmware are same. In the DeltaV diagnostic, NVM of the standby controller shows as good but the cold restart status shows invalid. When we use the standby controller as simplex it works good, however the cold restart status remain invalid. When it is configured as simplex, recycling power requires to download the program manually and the nvm does not hold the program. Flashed with DeltaV version 10 to see if we can get any change in response. But the response remain unchanged. Appreciate for giving us your hand to come-out of this problem.

We need to find the root of the issue. As Adrian points out, is it a fail open or close valve. You first need to align the AO block to match the valve. Sometimes people misconfigure the output and the PID action and although the loop controls alright, the OUT value is inverted. Two wrongs making a right.... Once the Control module is correct, the PID OUT should display correctly. If the module is correct I. E. Valve is open when out is 100%, then the issue is in the graphic.

The problem was the turk cable connection on the actuator. So I replaced the turk cable and the valve starting operating properly. That was the only thing that I hadn't checked. Thanks for the help.

I've seen this kind of behavior a couple of times in the past and the reasons were different in both cases. In one instance, it was a software related issue that did not allow the standby controller to come online; while in the other case, it was hardware related(problem with the backplane). It's not clear, how far you have gone with your troubleshooting and what possibilities have been eliminated, but I suggest that it would be best to work with the GSC on this one. They could advise you on where to look given your installation, configuration, etc. even help you with a telnet into the standby, and understand what is happening. Perhaps all that you might be having is a bad controller hardware that can be replaced easily.

Hi John, This is a hardware problem at our site we have changed all left and right side extenders This could be a short in the pin or "tin whiskers" issue Emerson is fully aware of this and please raise a call with GSC. Regards Syed Mavvaj Hussaini

The information provided does not support a conclusion of hardware fault or an issue with Tin Whiskers. As John suggests, engaging the GSC is your best recourse.
